☆ ‘Suncoast’ review: Nico Parker, Laura Linney star in Laura Chinn’s deeply personal coming-of-age story

CNN —A little movie with a dour theme, “Suncoast” had no chance of basking in the theatrical sunshine, but deserves to be seen on Hulu. Writer-director Laura Chinn tells the semi-autobiographical story about her dying brother and understandably crazed mother, with no-dry-eyes left performances by Nico Parker and Laura Linney, plus an assist from Woody Harrelson for good measure. “I’ll learn how to be fun again,” the mom tells the daughter in a rare moment of sobriety, acknowledging just how un-fun life has become for both. “Suncoast” premieres February 9 on Hulu. It’s rated R for teen drug and alcohol use.

PARK CITY, Utah (AP) — When writer-director Laura Chinn was a teenager in 2005, her mother moved her and her terminally ill brother to Florida. The circumstances provided the inspiration for Chinn’s directorial debut, “Suncoast,” starring Nico Parker as the teenager in question and Laura Linney as her mother. “It’s important to know that while Kristine is certainly archetypally based on Laura’s mother, while there may be some similarities here and there, I was not intentionally playing her mother,” Linney said. “It’s really a perfect song,” Chinn said,The “Suncoast” world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival last month was a teary occasion. Chinn’s own mother ran out of tissues and a stranger was right there with another to hand off.

Yet audio turns out to be the ideal way to experience “Summer, 1976,” a memory play by David Auburn that opened earlier this year at the Samuel J. Friedman Theater in New York. The veteran actresses Laura Linney and Jessica Hecht, reprising their stage roles, portray Diana and Alice, two women looking back at an unlikely friendship formed over one summer decades past. Alice, in turn, initially judges Diana to be “uptight,” but she grudgingly revises her opinion when Diana accepts her offer of weed on their daughters’ play date.

Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck remember the feeling of being the new kids at the Sundance Film Festival. “I remember being like, oh my God, this festival has been around 20 years, it’s such an old festival,” Boden said in a recent interview with The Associated Press. CNN —The nominees for the 80th Golden Globe Awards were announced on Monday. Mayan Lopez and Selenis Leyva, two of the stars from “Lopez vs. Lopez,” announced the range of film and television nominees as selected by members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). CNN —One of the most beloved modern Christmas classics is turning 20 next year, and to mark the occasion, cast members from the landmark 2003 romantic comedy “Love Actually” are reuniting for a TV special to air on ABC next week, the network announced Tuesday. Hugh Grant, Laura Linney, Emma Thompson, Bill Nighy and Thomas Brodie-Sangster are taking part in the special, along with the film’s writer-director Richard Curtis. The new reunion is not the first time the actors from “Love Actually” – who also include Keira Knightley, Liam Neeson and Colin Firth – have come together again. In 2017, a short sequel to the film was produced for NBC in honor of Red Nose Day, a charity for children in need created by Curtis. “The Laughter & Secrets of ‘Love Actually’: 20 Years Later – A Diane Sawyer Special” airs Nov. 29 at 8 p.m.
